With the warmer weather coming, it is time to prepare trees for spring on your property. You want to make sure they are ready for the warmer weather so that they bloom beautifully and flower to give you all the spring colors. Below are some tree care tips to prepare your property.
Clean Up Dead Debris
Leaves, branches, and twigs are probably filling your lawn from the winter weather. This is normal, and you will see it each year. Before you can do any intense preparations, you need to get your lawn cleaned up from the winter. Make sure to remove any debris and dead foliage from the ground. You want to also clean around your home in the flower beds and beneath each tree.
Water and Fertilize Your Trees
Because trees tend to dry out through the winter, you want to make sure they have water available as the weather warms up. Since the weather will pick up quickly, they will go through the water just as quickly. While you may have a little moisture left from some snow and ice, a good watering at the base of the tree will give it ample amounts to store.
While you are watering the trees, go ahead and fertilize them. Make sure that each tree has enough fertilizer at the base and in the beds planted below, so they can pull the nutrients from the ground as they would the water.
Prune Your Trees
Before they start to bloom, you want to prune your trees while you have the opportunity. Ensure you are pruning in the right areas. To reduce the risk of infection, any branches that look weak or frail should be removed immediately. You can also manage their size with pruning so that they do not get too large.
Mulch Your Trees
Your next step is to make sure that the hard work you have done to your trees is protected with mulch. By adding that top layer of mulch to your tree bases, you keep the water and fertilizer down in the ground. Without mulch, it could be blown away with the wind or washed away quickly with an unexpected rain shower. By applying the mulch, fertilizer and moisture are secure. Also, weeds will have a hard time breaking through this layer and competing with the trees.
